Running a restaurant, café, or retail shop is already hectic. The last thing you need is your digital menu board going black or showing an error icon because your internet provider is experiencing an outage. Not only is it frustrating for you, but it also slows down service and impacts customers.
Fortunately, you don't need the cloud or internet access to run crisp, modern display boards. By utilizing your local WiFi network, you can run menu screens 100% offline. In this guide, we'll explain how it works and how to set it up step-by-step.
How Loco Offline Networking Works
1. Phone App
Cast layouts & playlists
2. Local WiFi Router
Sends packets locally (No Internet Needed)
3. TV Display
Saves media & plays offline
Why Choose an Offline Digital Menu System?
Standard cloud-based digital signage apps load menus from external servers. If your internet drops, the screen halts. Going offline-first brings major benefits:
- 100% Uptime: Displays keep running continuously, regardless of weather or ISP problems.
- Zero Monthly Fees: Without cloud servers hosting your files, you avoid paying monthly SaaS subscriptions.
- Perfect Loading Speed: Media plays directly from the TV's internal storage, which means no buffering, lag, or pixelated loading bars.
Prerequisites: What You Need
- An Android TV Screen: Any smart TV running Android TV / Google TV, or standard TV screens plugged into an Amazon Firestick, Xiaomi Box, or Chromecast.
- A Smartphone: Android or iPhone (to design menus and cast them to the screen).
- A Router/Modem: A local WiFi router to connect your phone and TV. (Note: The router does not need to be plugged into an internet cable!).
Step 1: Install the Player App on the TV
First, search and download the TV player app. Open the Google Play Store on your smart TV or Amazon Appstore on your Firestick, search for "Loco Digital Signage Player", and install it. When you open the TV app, it will display a pairing QR code and local IP address on the screen.
Step 2: Install the Controller App on Your Phone
On your iPhone or Android smartphone, download the "Loco Digital Signage" app from the App Store or Google Play. This app acts as your menu designer, remote controller, and coordinator.
Step 3: Connect to the Same Router Network
Go to your phone settings and TV settings, and make sure both devices are connected to the exact same WiFi network. Once connected, open the smartphone controller app. The app will automatically scan your local network for active TV displays running Loco.
Step 4: Pair & Cast Your Menu Board
From the phone controller app, tap the QR scanner icon and scan the pairing QR code displayed on the TV screen. Once connected, you can upload menu images, design layout configurations using Canva templates, or set up media slideshow playlists. Press **"Push to Screen"**—the phone will transfer the files directly over your local WiFi router, and the TV will immediately save them to its internal storage and start displaying them. You can now shut off your phone or turn off the router—your display will continue playing indefinitely!
A Note on Layout Editing
You can design your menu layouts inside Canva, download them as JPG/PNG images at 1920x1080 resolution, and upload them straight to the Loco phone app. Loco fits them to screen dimensions instantly for a sharp, high-end look.
